-------------------------------------
I quote:
  1. belgium consists of 2 linguistic parts... dutch speaking & french speaking (third part is german speaking but so small it's hardly worth mentioning in politics...) Historically these two parts have been seperated by a 'line' that marks the language border which implies that all official instances north of the border speak dutch & south they speak french
  2. This however has nothing to do with the language spoken by the inhabitants, there are towns on the nothern side where 90% of the inhabitants speak french & vice versa (although there aren't many of them)
  3. anyway, the capital (Brussels) has always been considered as being bi-lingual, meaning that all instances need to be able to address you in both dutch & french, which in all practical means isn't the case... 50% only speaks french, mainly because the people that work there are either too stupid to learn dutch or they just don't want to (last phrase was uttered by a rather big shot dutch politician)
  4. somewhere in the 70's a situation has been created around brussels where, for elections, people could request any & all documents in their native language. However, this apparently is in conflict with our constitution.
  5. So... after the last elections that actually had some effect (back in 2002) it was made clear by our constitutional court (highest law enforcement organ in belgium) that that particular situation in that region (known as 'Brussel-Halle-Vilvoorde') needed to be resolved before any new elections could be held... elections that had some legal grounds anyway
  6. So THAT particular dossier has been on the table for about 6years now, and last year in June 2007 the elections came and this one guy stated: "I'm gonna solve that situation in 5 minutes, all it takes is for the dutch speaking politicians to have a wee bit of courage and actually VOTE for it"
  7. he won the elections & became prime minister
  8. but as you can imagine, the solution he proposed (being a dutch politician) wasn't exactly to the liking of the french politicians and hence the games began and now yesterday our prime minister saw & finally accepted that his '5 minutes of political courage to solve the BHV situation' was based on air and it fell away beneath him
  9. The thing is, the french speaking politicians have a certain solution in which the ask for stuff which the dutch speaking politicians won't accept, and vice versa...
  10. Long story short, it's been over a year since our government actually gave the impression of doing something constructive
End Quote
